“Have you ever talked to a tree,
or run with the wind,
or danced with the rain?
Have you ever dreamt with the silent stones?”
Rosie May Jones is a multidisciplinary artist and poet exploring the intricate relationship between landscape and identity. Her work weaves together the voices of both place and people, revealing how our sense of self is profoundly shaped by the landscapes we inhabit and the stories embedded within them.
Her-story
As a multidisciplinary artist and poet specialising in performance and place-responsive practice, my relationship with landscape has been transformative. In 2023, I set out on a 300 mile journey, walking from the English Lakes to the Scottish Highlands. While some warned it could be dangerous for a woman to sleep alone in the hills, for me one of the most dangerous places I have ever encountered was in the home. Having left a relationship that had threatened my life, I set out to reclaim my power by sleeping beneath the stars, swimming in mountain tarns and carrying all I needed to survive on my back. On this journey I discovered more than just my own resilience, I learnt to listen to the poetry woven into the wild landscape and the stories singing in the silent stones.
Since that transformative journey, I have developed a distinctive body of work exploring the intricate relationship between landscape and identity. Through various residencies, I have developed co-creative methods that centre our connection to the natural world creating poetry and performances that weave together the voices of both place and people. Alongside my practice I have also developed a series of immersive workshops inviting participants to discover their own narratives in relationship to landscape, guiding them to "story themselves" into nature while developing poetic expression and storytelling skills.
